Deepavali

Het Hindoestaanse feest Deepavali bezorgt de meisjes aanstaand weekend een lang weekend; maandag en dinsdag vrij!

Diwali symbolises the spiritual "victory of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance".

Invalid insecurities

She looks in the mirror that shows her reflection,
But all she can see is her own imperfection,
Her legs are too short, her torso too wide,
And she’ll only start eating when she’s satisfied.

She can’t see she’s a beautiful mess,
This will be clear when she cares a bit less,
Girls are jealous, boys get butterflies,
Nonetheless, to sleep, she cries.

Then there’s the boy with the crooked smile,
Compared to the others, he has a weird style,
That’s why he gets bullied, that’s why he gets picked on,
To make sure all his self-esteem is gone.

Little did they know, they only took a small part,
Because he barely had any, from the start,
All I can say that it would have been great,
If he hadn’t found out he’s perfect, so late.

People pretend as if they are unbreakable,
But honestly, pain is relatable,
Everyone knows what it feels like to cry,
What it feels like to gossip, what it feels like to lie.

Reality dawns on us, just like a beast,
And we can’t handle it, to say the least,
It spits fire and attacks us with might,
But we’re too weak to fight the fight.

One day she’ll look back at her reflection,
And realize that she’s utter perfection,
In the future he will find,
His crooked smile is one-of-a-kind.

Merle schreef deze prachtige poem in opdracht van school (het vak Engels). Er moest verplicht metaforen, symbolieken en alliteraties in. Ik vind 'm inhoudelijk ontroerend en mooi.
